The martial arts community in the Midlands is abuzz with the recent achievements of Dudley and Oldbury TAGB Tae Kwon-Do Clubs, along with the Stourport TAGB Tae Kwon-Do Club, which proudly introduced a new 2nd Degree Black Belt recipient. With a legacy spanning over 35 years, Dudley TAGB Tae Kwon-Do Club continues to produce outstanding black belt achievers. At the recent grading event, the accomplished Victoria Massey ascended to the 1st Degree Black Belt rank, showcasing her skills in front of 5 TAGB Grand Masters. Vince Farquharson, the World Master and chief instructor of the club, praised Vicky’s dedication, emphasizing the critical role of discipline in mastering Tae Kwon-Do’s intricate techniques.

Noteworthy for its focus on physical and mental resilience, the Oldbury TAGB Tae Kwon-Do Club celebrated Lemar’s promotion to 1st Degree Black Belt, guided by dedicated instructors, including Master Vince Farquharson, Lisa Brown, and Georgia Elwell. Farquharson highlighted the club’s emphasis on holistic development, nurturing discipline and self-confidence in their students.

Simultaneously, the Stourport TAGB Tae Kwon-Do Club proudly recognized Kambiz Bassir’s dedication and perseverance, leading to his remarkable achievement of the 2nd Degree Black Belt. World Master Farquharson, an instructor at the club, emphasized Kambiz’s commitment to the art, highlighting the significance of dedication in the pursuit of excellence.

Co-ordination is basically moving 2 or more body parts at the same time. The ability to synchronise those movements, making sure they are performed smoothly, accurately and controlled motor responses.

CO-ORDINATION IS AN UNDERRATED AND OVERLOOKED PART OF FITNESS

Being able to perform smooth, efficient movements is an essential part of Tae Kwon-Do and any martial arts to ensure self defence can be carried out correctly.

HOW TAE KWON-DO IMPROVES CO-ORDINATION

Martial arts and Tae Kwon-Do consists of BILATERAL MOVEMENTS, which means movements are performed off both the left and right sides. In Tae Kwon-Do we may have a ‘preferred side’ when it comes to kicking and punching which would be naturally stronger and therefore used, however we practice both sides for self defence.

Secondly, Tae Kwon-Do teaches SPATIAL AWARENESS. Understanding where our body is in its environment is important to build co-ordination.

Finally, the most valuable part of Tae Kwon-Do at improving co-ordination is REPETITION, REPETITION, REPETITION! When you learn a new technique in Tae Kwon-Do, it is important to keep going over the technique to learn it, perfect it and use it. This is especially important when learning the basics. Your first stances, basic punches, kicks and blocks will be practiced more times than you will remember throughout your Tae Kwon-Do journey, supporting with co-ordination development. As World Master Vince Farquharson likes to put it: “Repetition is the mother of learning”. But, it is also the “mother of co-ordination development”.

DEVELOPMENTAL CO-ORDINATION DISORDER (DCD) & TAE KWON-DO

Developmental Co-Ordination Disorder (DCD), also known as Dyspraxia, is a condition affecting physical co-ordination. Martial arts are good for individuals with Dyspraxia, with benefits for posture, balance, strength and coordination as well as confidence and self-esteem. People with Dyspraxia also benefit from the relative stability of the environment in which martial arts take place, compared to activities such as team sports and ball games for example.

NEW LADIES ONLY TAE KWON-DO IN PALFREY!

Our new Ladies only class is coming to Palfrey, Walsall! Train with your daughters, mothers, aunties, and friends in a safe, secure environment.

You will learn the traditional art of Tae Kwon-Do, enabling you to train all through to your black belt whilst being apart of Europe’s martial arts organisation. Have the opportunity to train, grade and compete regionally, nationally and internationally with the TAGB, and the chance to train with some of highest-grade Tae Kwon-Do masters in the world.

In our fitness-based lessons you will learn self defence from experienced instructors, improving your confidence, discipline, focus and control. Feel as sense of achievement while having fun and getting fit. Gain strength, improve your flexibility and work on your co-ordination in a positive environment while making new friends.

We are working alongside One Palfrey Big Local so that we can support YOUR local community.

All our instructors are insured, first aid trained, safeguarding trained and qualified. Walsall Ladies Instructors Lisa Brown and Georgia Elwell are also qualified umpires and referees for the TAGB. This club is recognised by the Safeguarding Code. Part of West Midlands TAGB Tae Kwon-Do, associated with the Tae Kwon-Do Association of Great Britain (TAGB), British Tae Kwon-Do Council (BTC) and Sport England.

Dudley, Oldbury, Kidderminster, Stourport & West Bromwich TAGB Clubs, as part of West Midlands Tae Kwon-Do have proudly been awarded the Safeguarding in Martial Arts accreditation!

Following recent policy changes and training for instructors of these clubs we are pleased we hold this award. But what does that mean to you as parents?

The Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts recognises clubs or providers in England who have demonstrated that they have reached and maintained good safeguarding standards. We encourage Governing Bodies, associations, organisations, and franchisers to register interest and support the Code and activity deliverers who can work towards attaining recognition along with clubs and individual instructors, coaches and teachers outside of a club structure.

The scheme empowers parents/carers and educational establishments to make informed decisions when selecting a club or provider for their child/children, young people or adults in their care.

The Safeguarding Code has been developed through close consultation between Sport England, representatives from martial arts governing bodies and those with years of expertise in safeguarding. Support was also provided by the Child Protection in Sport Unit, the Ann Craft Trust and NWG Network.

It is funded by the National Lottery and was launched by the Sports Minister in early 2018.

As such, any martial arts club/organisation or individual in England who has achieved the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts, has successfully demonstrated to us that they have a good working knowledge of quality safeguarding practices will be able to reassure you that they have the following in place:

Disclosure and Barring Service Check for all coaches, staff and volunteers (this indicated if a person has a conviction to their name)
Safeguarding awareness training for all coaches, staff and volunteers
*All coaches will have hold a minimum coaching standard or coaching qualification
**A Safeguarding Policy
***A Safe Practice Policy
Insurance documentation
A reporting system for reporting participants’ safety and welfare
A complaints process for parents and all participants
Code of Conduct for children/young people, coaches/volunteers and parents
** This should be available to all staff, volunteers, parents and participants.
